FORMATS & FILE SIZES
Confused about pixels and megabytes?FILE SIZE, FILE FORMAT, IMAGE SIZE and DPI (DOTS PER INCH) all refer to the different properties of a digital image. Please read through this section carefully before submitting your brief.
FILE SIZE
The size of a file is expressed in kilobytes (Kb) or megabytes (Mb), kilobytes being the smaller unit of measurement. I can size images for web or print use at 72 dpi or 300 dpi, and can also e-mail small quantities of low resolution images if you have an urgent deadline to meet.
Where the highest quality is required, e.g. for brochures, magazines and annual reports, images can be supplied at much larger file sizes. These will generally be too large to e-mail, and turnaround times will also be longer.
If you are not sure what file size you will require, please contact me. Alternatively, if you are using a designer to compile your brochure, website etc, it's a good idea for me to speak directly to them. The terms HIGH RES and LOW RES are quite vague, and can lead to confusion.
FILE FORMAT
The majority of my images are supplied as JPEGs, although I can supply TIFF files too, if required.
IMAGE SIZE
This refers to the physical size of the image, e.g. 7" x 5".
DPI (Dots Per Inch)
For most print applications 300 dpi is standard. 72 dpi is ideal for website use.
